BCCI drops Yuvraj from Grade A, hikes retainership and fees

CHENNAI: The message is loud and clear for the under-performers in Indian cricket. The days of freebies are over and those who are not performing will not get paid "for just being there".

With that in mind, the BCCI has scrapped the Grade D of the central contracts, which means that the players who are not in fray for a Test berth won't take home a minimum amount of Rs 15 lakh, which was the case earlier.

A top BCCI functionary made it clear to TOI that "central contracts are essentially for the elite who have been doing well on a consistent basis".

"The moment a player comes into the Test side, he will be included in the C grade," the official said.

BCCI has pruned a list of 41 contracted players to 24, which means even players like RP Singh, Munaf Patel, Dinesh Karthik, S Badrinath, Irfan Pathan and Yusuf Pathan do not find themselves in the list. However, the biggest blow has surely come for Yuvraj Singh, who has been downgraded from Group A to Group B. "We don't have anything against any player. The players in the top bracket are getting an amount of Rs 1 crore instead of Rs 60 lakh. We wanted to ensure the top performers get more," the official added.

Suresh Raina has made it to the top bracket. The match fee for a player in the playing XI is Rs 7 lakh for Tests, Rs 4 lakh for ODIs and Rs 2 lakh for Twenty20s. The match fee for non-playing squad members will be 50 per cent of the fee.
