COMMONWEALTH GAMES - DAY 2 UPDATES

16:50 Just a momentary breather for everyone. But there's still lots of action to come - and medals.
It was infact the Para Sport 50 mtr freestyle S9 final. Apologies for that.
16:36 Natalie Du Toit claims the gold in the women's 50 mtr freestyle final. Australia takes silver while England takes bronze.
16:35 Just moments away from the women's 50 metre freestyle final. On your marks....
16:22 The timings are out and the Indian, Vikram Khade, has qualified and will start in Lane 7.
16:17 It's the second semifinal of the men's 50 mtr butterfly. Kenya and South Africa finish first and second.
16:15 More action in the pool. The men's 50 mtr butterfly first semifinal. Australia were so good they finished 1-2-3. An Indian finished in fourth. Could he make the cut and compete in the final?
Some interesting quotes from gold medal winner Gagan Narang.
“If you go by medals shooters win in international competitions and their performance, then shooting is the number one,” Gagan
“Unlike other sports, we cannot express our feelings in front of the media or fans, because shooting is like that,” Gagan said.
Is shooting really India's number one sport? The floor is open. And we could get lots of views in the coming days.
16:05 Australia are back and how. It's the women's 50 mtr breaststroke. A 1-2 but quite surprisingly Leiston Pickett pips Leisel Jones into second position. England gets the bronze.
16:02 One more for England in the pool. Liam Tancock gets the gold in the men's 50 mtr backstroke. England are up and running.
15:59 Australia have to be satisfied with the silver and bronze. Emily Seebohm, who said before the games that she wanted to win eight gold medals, finishes with a bronze.
15:55 How about this. England, through the 50 mtr Butterfly, have got its first gold medal of the 19th CWG. Fran Halsall is the name. And If i do remember the starting list there were there Australian swimmers in there. Fantastic achievement.
Tejaswini Sawant and Lajjakumari Gauswami getting their silver medals. Wonder what it is like to stand on the second step of the podium. So near yet so far or thrilled at winning a medal for the country?
Bad news if you are Indian squash fan. Barker has just beaten Ghosal.
More medals decided. The men's weightlifting in the 62 kg category is over. Malaysia get the gold. India finish agonisingly in fourth place. Oh, it's actually 1-2 for Malaysia with A. Jumith getting the gold. Sri Lanka get the bronze.
Some weightlifting action. The strongest contenders slowly but gradually raising the bar. Those calves, shoulders and biceps would take a pasting but would surely be worth the effort if it yields the athlete a medal. Of course Indians among the fray.
News just in; Australia have claimed one more gold in the Velodrome. By my reckoning they are already on 7 golds. A one horse race already?
Can you ever keep the Australians out of the medals? No.... They have picked up two golds in cycling.
Saurav Ghosal has won the second set against Peter Barker of England. It's now 1 set apiece.
The medal ceremony for the winners of the 25 mtr pistol pairs have just been doled out. The Indian pair of Rahi Sarnobat and Anisha Sayyed of course claimed the gold.
14:43: Manoj Kumar victorious. The judges may as well have slept through this bout, their services were not required. Comprehensive win.

14:30: And here we go, Manoj Kumar against a boxer from Nigeria. Manoj leads 14-1. Bit embarassing this. Way too one-sided. Slow motion replays of the highlights of the match make for interesting viewing. The upper cut smacks the nose and head is thrown back. All in slow motion.

14:22: Boxer Manoj Kumar will be in action very soon. India have pinned their hopes on the boxers to get a sizeable medal tally.

14:16: Silver to the team from England and bronze to Bangladesh. Bangladesh received a huge applause. Smiles all around as the top 3 gather for photo opportunities.

14:09: Time for the medals ceremony for the Pairs 10m air rifle event. Suresh Kalmadi to present the medals to the winners. "Commonwealth Games champions ...- Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang".. Indian national anthem plays..

14:00: So the two shooting golds propels India to second spot in the medals tally behind Australia. Early days, but a definite boost for the Indian contingent. Australia have four gold to India's two, while third place Canada have won one gold.

13:45: Kalmadi has apparently considering filling the near empty stadiums with school children. Wise move, empty stadiums kills the atmosphere for spectators (on TV and in the stadium) and athletes.

13:16: India blank Barbados 5-0 in the badminton mixed team event.

13:11: And that's that. Somdev wraps up a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Somdev hardly troubled in the second set, this after staging a fightback in the first.

13:10: Somdev serving for the match now. All too easy at 5-2

13:08: Few Pakistanis in the crowd, waving their flag. I'm sure they will be pleased with their hockey team, which beat Sclotland earlier.

13:04: Boxing time. Amandeep Singh beats his Kenyan opponent in the light flyweight (49kg) category. Amandeep did a lot of showboating, with his arms spread like a bird, inviting an offensive. "Hit me, I dare you", said Amandeep. Pat came the reply from the Kenyan: "No thanks. I'm good."

12:52: More details on the Sarnobat-Sayyed gold. They shot a combined 1158, which incidentally is a CWG record.

12:45: Para-sport swimmers Kiran Tak and Anjani Patel progress to the semifinals. Fantastic, probably the best news of the day.Unfortunately, Vineeta Pathak bows out.

12:41: Swimming news. Virdhawal Khade qualifies for the 50m butterfly semifinals. But it is all over for Jyotsana Pansare, Fariha Zaman, Talasha Satish Prabhu, Aaron D’Souza, Rohit Havaldar in various swimming events.

12:29: Pakistan beat Scotland 3-0 in hockey. Wasn't a commanding performance, but Pakistan will not complain. Pakistan are placed in a clearly tough group, with India, Australia and Malaysia for company. Do not want to wager on which two teams could go through from here.

12:26: Some info, Somdev is the top seed here. Not a good advertisement for the quality of tennis on offer when a player ranked 100 is given the top billing. Don't think Somdev and the others care, they are here to win gold for their countries, not worry about quality

12:23: So after trailing 2-4, Somdev wins the first set 6-4. His opponent David Mullings is no pushover, stretched Somdev in the first set. Very elegant player, Mullings. Tennis equivalent of David Gower. Both left-handers too.

12:20: Got confirmation that Deepak Sharma and Omkar Singh won silver medal in Pairs 50m Pistol event. So that's two gold and one silver for India in shooting today

12:19: Somdev claws back. He now serves for the first set at 5-4

12:03: Tennis: Somdev Devvarman in a spot of bother against Devin Mullings of Bahamas, trailing 2-4 in the first set. Our sports reporter Kunal Diwan tells me the two faced each other once during Somdev's college tennis days, and Mullings won the match.

11:54: While I get more information on the women's shooting gold for India, I've been told the three wrestling finals will happen today evening. Ravinder Singh (Greco-Roman-style 60kg), Anil Kumar (Greco-Roman 96kg) and Ravinder Singh (Greco Roman 60kg).

11:37: Another gold for India. Rahi Sarnobat and Anisha Sayyed win the 25m pistol pairs

11:32: Here are some of the Indian stars in action today - Akhil Kumar and Vijender Singh (boxing), Gagan Narang and Abinav Bindra (shooting-individual), Joshna Chinappa-Dipika Pallikal (squash doubles), Somdev Devvarman (tennis singles), Paes-Bhupathi (tennis doubles)

11:22: Staying with the gold pair, this is what a PTI report says - "World record holder Gagan, coming off a none-too-impressive season, shot a spectacular sequence of 99, 100, 100, 99, 100, 100 to total a grand 598. Beijing Olympic gold medalist Bindra’s series read 100, 98 ,99, 100, 99, 99 for a total of 595 in the first shooting event of the Games."

11:06: Bindra-Narang pair recorded 1193 points to take the top spot. England pair of James Huckle and Kenny Parr win silver and Bangladesh’s Abdullah Hel Baki and Mohammad Asif Hossain Khan win bronze

11:02: Bindra-Narang beat the CWG record they set in Melbourne 2004

10:57: Three wrestling medals assured for India.

10:51: Bindra-Narang are the defending CWG champions in this event. Narang shot 598 and Bindra shot 595 to win gold today.

10:44: Shooting was the India's strength and the pair did exceptionally well. Received reports that the Bindra-Narang combine have created a CWG record. More on this very soon.

10:40: Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang win gold medal in Pairs 10m air rifle. First gold for India!

10:18: Ravinder Singh beats Joseph from Nigeria in the Greco-Roman-style in the 60-kg category semifinal. The crowd is excited.

10:14: Wrestling is much a man's sport. I just saw a competitor who refused to get proper treatment for his bloody nose. All he wants to do is fight. No fake wrestling, this.

09:56: England win 4-1 against Wales in women's hockey. Walk in the park
Typos galore, kindly excuse. I'll keep it clean from hereon.

09:40: Anil Kumar beats Mark Montgomary in a 96kg qualification

09:36: India's Sanjay wins the 74kg men's qualification against his Samoan opponent

09:32: Wrestling is on. India's Sanjay leads Samoa's Ekeroma

09:28: Women's hockey is on too. England facing Wales, a rare sight in these types of competition, considering they compete as one team in the Olympics. England lead 3-0.

09:14: Watch out for wrestling events, which begin very soon. Talking of wrestling, our sports reporter Y.B. Sarangi says "Wrestling holds the key" for India.

09:03: 18 gold up for grabs today. Let me break it down for you (DX style) - 5 in swimming, 3 in cycling, 1 in gymnastics artistic, 4 in shooting, 2 in weightlifting and 3 in Wrestling.

Hockey fans, be sure to tune in at 8.30 p.m. when India takes on Malaysia (men's).

08:56: Cristian Springer from Australia has set a new CWG record in the 100m breaststroke with a timing of 1:00:61. Expect more records to be broken when we progress to the finals.

08:53: Brenton Rickard of Australia wins the third heat of the 100m breaststroke in 1:01:20.

08:47: Puneet Rana from India wins the first heat of the 100m breaststroke. "Timing not very good, but a good achievement nevertheless," says an excited commentator. Timing was 1:05:97.

08:44: Belinda Hockin from Australia wins the fourth heat of the women's 100m backstroke, Emily Seebohm finishes second.

08:36: Straightaway some good news for Indian fans. Zaman Fariha wins the first heat of the 100m backstroke.
