Narang wins gold, silver for Bindra at CWG

NEW DELHI: World No 3 Gagan Narang, riding on his good form, won gold in the 10m air rifle individual event of the Commonwealth Games, while compatriot Abhinav Bindra settled for a silver at the Karni Singh Shooting Range on Wednesday.

Earlier, Narang shot a perfect 600 to equal his world record and qualified for the finals of 10 metre air rifle individual event along with his compatriot and Beijing Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra.

At the Karni Singh Shooting Range, Narang took some time to warm up but once he got going there was no stopping him.

Bindra was also calm and composed and finished second with 595 points. The golden boy of Indian shooting had a similar score on Tuesday when he teamed up with Narang to win the pairs gold in the same event with a Games record.

Both the shooters are in fine form, as they proved winning the pairs gold on Tuesday, and that adds to the excitement in the build-up to the qualification round.

The Indian stars last competed in the World Championships in July and the result was a bronze medal for Narang (597) while Bindra settled for the 25th spot with a below-par score of 593. It was the first time the two were firing side by side after the Beijing Games when Bindra created history while Gagan saw his dreams evaporate as he missed a place in the final by a whisker.

As India and Bindra celebrated the rare success, Narang put in more hard work and the result was a magical score of 600/600 in the preliminary round and another final record of 703.5 at the World Cup Final in Bangkok.

Though Gagan said on Tuesday that there is no competition between him and Bindra, both are fierce competitors who hate to lose and results in the past four years are proof of that. Though Gagan is in fine form, Bindra is capable of producing his best on the big day. If the both the shooters reach their own high points, then Delhi will add new entries to the shooting record books.
