COMMONWEALTH GAMES - DAY 3 UPDATES

8: 30 PM- Weightlifter Ravi Kumar wins gold in 69kg category
 
  Kumar won with a record total of 321kg after having set new marks of 146kg in the snatch and 175kg in the clean and jerk.

Defending champion Chinthana Vidanage of Sri Lanka took silver with 308kg while Mohammad Hafifi Mansor of Malaysia claimed bronze with a 306kg total.


5: 50 PM- Sunil Kumar wins bronze in 66 kg
Wrestler Sunil Kumar won the bronze in the Greco-Roman 66 kg category in the Commonwealth Games here Wednesday, defeating B. Hawthorn of Wales 11-0. 

5:25 PM- Rajinder Kumar wins gold in Greco-Roman wrestling in 55 kg category
Indian wrestler Rajender Kumar won the gold in the Greco-Roman 55kg category, defeating Pakistan's A. Hussain 11-0, at the Commonwealth Games here Wednesday.


4:20 PM- 
CWG tennis: Rushmi shocks Katie in women's singles  

India's Rushmi Chakravarthi shocked third seed Katie O'Brien of England 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 to enter the quarter-finals of the women's singles competition. 

4:10 PM-  
Australia beat India

Australia scored once in each half to wear down India 2-1 for their second win in pool A of the women's hockey competition in the 19th Commonwealth Games, here on Wednesday.

Goals by Shelly Liddelow (12th) and Megan Rivers (60th) set up the Aussie win as the Indians, who had drawn 1-1 with Scotland, woke up to the task rather too late and Rani Rampal's strike in the 68th minute went in vain. 


4: 07 PM-  Weightlifter Renu Bala wins gold
Indian weightlifter Renu Bala Chanu won the gold in the women's 58kg category on the third day of competitions at the Commonwealth Games here Wednesday. India now have nine golds in their kitty

4: 05 PM- Omkar Singh wins Gold in 50m Pistol Men's Singles event at CWG
Indian shooter Omkar Singh won the gold in the 50 metre pistol event on the third day of competitions at the 2010 Commonwealth Games Wednesday.

2: 45 PM- CWG shooting: Noria, Sodhi win double trap silver

 
Junior world champion Asher Noria and world No.3 Ronjan Sodhi of India teamed up to win the silver in the men's pairs double trap shooting event at the Commonwealth Games here Wednesday. They missed the gold by one point.

Noria and Sodhi together shot 188 points.

Stevan Walton and Steven Scott of England bagged the gold with a total of 189 points, a new Games record.

Sodhi had a perfect 50 in the first and 45 in the second at the Karni Singh Shooting Range.

Noria shot a total of 93. Of this, 46 came in the first round and 47 in the second.

Walton shot 96 and Scott 93. They went past the record of 186 set by Australian Mark Russell and Craig Trembath in the 2006 Melbourne Games.

Malaysian pair of Benjamin Cheng Jie Khor (93) and Seng Chye Khor (92) got the bronze.



2:30 PM- Rohan Bopanna knocked out of singles
India's Rohan Bopanna lost to second seed Australian Peter Luczak 2-6, 6-7 (5) in the second round to bow out of the men's singles tennis competition of the Commonwealth Games here Wednesday.

2:20 PM-  India's Rahi Sarnobat takes silveShooter Anisa wins gold, Rahi silver  

Shooter Anisa Syyed makes it two in two days. She wins gold in women 25 m pistol with new Games record. India's Rahi Sarnobat takes silver

1:20 pm: 
Australia got another gold in cycling with Megan Dunn winning the 25km points race. 

1:15 pm: Update - 
England's Steve Scott and Steven Walton got the gold in the men's double trap (pairs). India's pairing of Sodhi and Noria had to settle for the silver.

1:15 pm:  
England survived an initial scare to beat Canada 4-1 for their second win in Pool B of the women's hockey competition in the Commonwealth Games here Wednesday.

Canada struck early from a penalty stroke by Diana Roemer. But England fought back to score through Kate Walsh, Alex Danson (2) and Crista Cullen to hand Canada their second defeat. 


1:10 pm: 
Australian wrestler Hassene Fkiri, who was disqualified for obscene gestures and unsporting behaviour during his gold-medal bout against India's Anil Kumar in the Commonwealth Games, will apologise to match officials

Fkiri refused to shake hands with Anil after the bout and showed middle finger to officials after the rough bout.

During the bout, the Australian was cautioned twice, once for headbutting and then for slapping the Indian. Fkiri was booed by the crowd and later disqualified by the referee for indiscipline.

The Australian wrestler was denied the silver medal, which he would have picked up after losing to Anil Kumar. 


12:29 pm:
 Asher Noria and Ronjan Sodhi give Indian another medal with a silver in the double trap (pairs) event.
12:18 pm: Gagan Narang wins his second gold for the 10 meter air rifle event with a brilliant 600 shot. The feat equalled his own world record set earlier during qualifying. Abhinva Bindra had to settle for silver after he was beaten by Narang.
12:10 pm: Sania beats Brittany Teei for an easy victory in the second round of the women's singles.
12: 05 pm: 
Pakistani wrestler Shujauddin Malik, who was reportedly stopped from carrying the national flag at the Commonwealth Games opener, has vowed to 'recover from the shock' and win a gold medal. 

12: 05 pm:
 Ace Indian rifle shooter Gagan Narang today shot a perfect 600 to equal his own world record in men's 10m individual air rifle qualification at the Dr Karni Singh Range here.
The Hyderabadi marksman had earlier shot 600 out of 600 in the World Cup in Beijing in 2008. He had scored 10.5 in the final round to take his tally to 703.5. Abhinav Bindra, Gagan's partner in 10m air rifle (pairs ) finished second on 595, followed by Englishman James Huckle.
12:00 pm: Update - World champions Australia took just 14 minutes to shake off the early morning blues and then proceed to dismantle Scotland 9-0 to open their campaign in the men's hockey competition of the Commonwealth Games on a strong note here Wednesday.

Playing the Scots for the first time, the Aussies overcame initial rustiness and got going with goals from Luke Doerner (3), Chris Ciriello (2), Rob Hammond, Trent Mitton, Simon Orchard and Des Abboott.

Australian skipper Jamie Dwyer said 'It is tough of course to play at 8.30 in the morning, but it goes for every other team. There were some patches we didn't play well, but against India tomorrow (Thursday), we need to play well for the entire 70 minutes,' he said. 
With day three well in swing, the action is beginning to pick up. India will be looking at the shooters and lifters to increase the medal tally today as well. 

11: 25 am:
 In the mixed team event in badminton, India cleans out Wales with a 5-0 win.

11: 12 am: 
Sania Mirza begins the second round of the women's singles.

11:10 am: 
The Australian juggernaut continues unabated. Aussie men's hockey team whitewashes Scotland 9-0.

11: 00 am: 
Manoj Kumar overcomes South Africa's Van Zyl to enter the finals of wrestling (84kg Greco-Roman)

10:55 am: 
Tennis star Somdev Devvarman beats Sri Lanka's Amresh Jayawickrame and enters quarter-finals. 

10:40 am: 
Australia's Ivan Popov beats India's Dharmender Dalal in the semi-finals of wrestling (120kg Greco-Roman) 

India continues to look strong in badminton but the main issue for the day is the low spectator turn-out. With as few as a 100 seats out of 60,000 being occupied for some events yesterday, viewer apathy has become a major issue for the organisers and the broadcasters. 

The thrilling India - Australia Test match has been given as the main reason behind low spectator turn-out yesterday. It is yet to be seen if today will turn-out to be any different.

10: 24 am: 
India looking strong against Wales in the men's doubles  badminton game in the mixed team category. 

10: 00 am:
 Rajender Kumar qualifies for the finals in wrestling (55kg Greco-Roman). 

9:50 am: 
Sunil Kumar loses to England's Dykin in wrestling (66kg).  

9:25 am: 
India take a 2-0 lead over Wales in the mixed team event in badminton. Chetan Anand beat Martin Lewis in the opening game.
